DUAL DIAGNOSIS - Treating Co-occurring Disorders

Here is a story from one of our staff who has hands on experience with this scenario;
My name is Dennis and in my dual diagnosis treatment center I was given this diagnosis; bi-polar, schizo-affective, with psychotic episodes. When the doctor told me this I thought that they had closed the gates of Hell on me because I knew that I was broken but this seemed absolutely insurmountable.
They informed me that I needed medicines designed to help me with both the addiction and the diagnosis but I was resistant, real resistant at first. The problem was that my drugs and alcohol came under control but my mental was now becoming all encompassing; that is that my thinking was so out of control I was no good to anyone, especially not myself.
I came to believe that the doctors might be right and they helped me with my mental and the counselors and therapists helped me with my other problems. That was 23 years ago and I have now fully recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of my mind and body.
