The Intervention;
Many times, it is helpful to hold what is called an intervention. This is where we meet with the family of the person in trouble with the sole objective of getting them into addiction treatment here at Above It All.
Usually this person has acted out with negative behaviors that deeply affect the lives of their family. Typically, the addict either doesn't care, or they believe that they are not hurting anyone but themselves. This is denial, and it is a formidable foe because it can work both ways; with the addict who needs help and refuses to recognize it, and with the family who try to insist that they can do it without outside help. Usually by the time we get involved, the family members are at their wits end. This is where hope begins.
An intervention specialist meets with the family of the addict for two or three sessions -- without informing the addict of it. A time is then scheduled for the entire family to get together. Our specialist will then guide the addict to the meeting (intervention). At the meeting, the family, one by one, has the opportunity to tell the addict just exactly how they are affecting them personally. The intervention is a very intense situation with raw emotions on display and occasionally angry outbursts by both the family and addict. Being aware of the atmosphere at an intervention can help you to prepare for the reality of what will likely happen. It is imperative that the intervention is guided and managed by a professional interventionist.
When all the cards are on the table, it is hoped -- and very often achieved -- that the addict will see that they do need professional help. This is when the interventionist introduces the Above It All solution to everyone involved.
During this time, the addict is afforded an opportunity to get their things together and we take the opportunity to reason with them about the importance of entering recovery right away. The client naturally feels that they have too much going on and that they could not possibly leave right then. Details are worked out with the family and Above It All personnel to surmount all obstacles so the addict can feel cared for from the first day.
The new Above It All client is immediately flown out on a plane or driven personally by one of our drivers to the beautiful mountains where Lake Arrowhead awaits, just two hours outside of Los Angeles, California. This drive is the start of what will be the best decision of their lives.
